CARTOON MENAGERIE
This series is an homage to iconic cartoons from my childhood in film, tv and video games. Each piece is a part of a greater menagerie of childhood memories, elevating and transforming the originals into their own nostalgic showpiece. I have always found it interesting and unusual that so many wild animals are made approachable in cartoons and give us this false sense of closeness, much like old menageries. By taking the original aesthetic and reinventing them into realistic forms and settings, it highlights the surrealism while also celebrating the color and whimsy that makes these memories great.
There are 3 pieces in this series and each piece is 16”x20” in watercolor, gouache and on cold press watercolor paper.
This piece focuses around the Pink Panther with hidden references to both the movies and cartoons, and plays upon the theme with the panther as a house pet.
This piece focuses around Toucan Sam and plays upon the theme with the toucan at a cereal bird bath in the center of a topiary garden estate.
This piece focuses around the Donkey Kong Gorilla comfortably lounging in a study with hidden references to both the original game and various other video game appearances.
